Segments are defined by the event type and can be used to group requests by certain criteria in Policy Management. When a segment condition is evaluated as true, all policies linked to the segment are evaluated to provide a decision. If there are no policies linked to a segment, the default decision for the event type is returned.
Policy Management allows fraud professionals to define segments and policies to meet specific business needs. Segments and policies work together to reduce friction for good customers while adding friction to potentially risky transactions.
When a Login, New Account Opening, or Payments Fraud decision is requested, segments are used to group users by certain criteria. This the login has an appropriate policy set applied. Each segment has its own policy set, which makes it possible to create a customized level of friction based on the attributes of the customer signing in.

For each Login, New Account Opening, or Payments Fraud decision, segments are evaluated in order. The default segment and its corresponding criteria apply automatically when no other segments have been created, or when none of the criteria of any other existing segments are met.
It is not mandatory to create segments. For some customers, the best business outcome is achieved when all users need to meet the same criteria to sign in with or without friction. Your Customer Success Manager can help determine the best setup for your specific business needs.
To change the order of a segment, drag and drop the segment or edit the segment number and save the changes.
Every customer begins with a default segment. If no custom segments are created, then all evaluations select the default segment and its policy set. When custom segments are created, but none are selected because one or more of their conditions do not evaluate as true, then the default segment is chosen. The default segment cannot be moved from last place.
We recommend that a policy set is created for the default segment prior to adding any new segments.
After creating a segment, you can edit the Segment Name, Description, Tags, Segment Conditions, and Linked Policies. You cannot change the Event Type after creating a segment.
