Global Search expands a search to match part of a value in some fields. Each field uses one of five match rules automatically, so the same search term can match differently in different fields.
You do not select a search mode. Global Search applies the match rule for each field every time you search. A complete, correct value always matches its field. The match rule determines whether part of a value, or a value with a spelling difference, also matches.

How it matches |
Fields |
|---|---|---|
|
Complete value |
The search term must be the complete value. Part of the value does not match. |
Order ID, merchant ID, site ID, payment token, session ID, customer ID, channel, billing phone, shipping phone, card BIN and last 4 digits |
|
Starts with |
The value must begin with the search term. A search term in the middle or at the end of the value does not match. |
IP address, custom data fields |
|
Anywhere |
The search term can match any part of the value. |
Billing email |
|
Start of a word |
Each word that you enter must match a complete word in the name. The last word that you enter can match the start of a word. A search term that starts in the middle of a word does not match. |
Customer name |
|
Fuzzy |
Each word that you enter is compared separately with the address. Words with small spelling differences match. Every word must match. |

Note
A search term that does not match one field can still match another field on the same transaction. For example, ith does not match the customer name Jane Smith, but it matches the billing email jane.smith@example.com because the billing email matches anywhere in the value.
The billing address and shipping address fields are the only fields that match words with spelling differences. For details, see How fuzzy matching works for addresses.
